How fast will my Internet Connection be?
All Broadband Max services advertise performance up to a theoretical maximum limit of 8Mbps. While most of our customers achieve excellent performance from their connection, there are some factors which can limit the performance of broadband services on your telephone line, such as line quality and your distance from the exchange.
Broadband Speed Availabilty Check
Broadband Max services are 'rate adaptive' and will operate at the maximum stable speed of the telephone line - 8Mbps represents the theoretical maximum line speed, but users should expect no more than 7.1Mbps, even under ideal line quality and length conditions (most users will obtain between 2Mbps and 6Mbps, depending on line quality).
The download speeds you can achieve are dependant on how far you are from your local telephone exchange, and the conditions of your telephone line. Here at Cobweb, we strive to achieve the fastest possible service for you, and will ensure your line is enabled for the Max service even if you have migrated from a slower ADSL product.
The Broadband Max speed that can be supported on an individual line is governed by a wide range of physical factors. BT estimates that, currently, 78% of BT phone lines should support broadband at line rates of 4Mbit/s and above, with 6Mbit/s and above available to more than 42% of lines. For those living or working close to their local telephone exchange, line rates of up to the maximum 7.1Mbit/s should be achievable.

Contention Ratio – what does it mean?
All ADSL services are provided as "contended services" - bandwidth is shared between service users, and speeds may fluctuate at busy times; service performance and availability is not guaranteed. All quoted speeds are theoretical maximums and do not take into account line conditions, protocol overheads, or network traffic levels. Business users are recommended to subscribe to services with a 20:1 contention ratio.
